6 Days in Cairo

All up we spent 6 days in Cairo, and what an experience!

My friend, Goweid, met us at the airport with his brother Romany, and then they took us to a house belonging to the Coptic Church which cost us 140 Egyptian Pounds per night. ($29 Aust)

We ordered “sandwiches” for dinner and it came consisting of 3 little hot dog rolls, no butter, a big slab of cheese in one, a sausage in another, and white cream cheese in the third with a Lebanese cucumber on the side. I had always said to Goweid that everything about Egypt is different or opposite to us Aussies!  Well, I was living it now!

Even our beds were different!  Two single beds, but 3/4 in size.  The pillow was the width of the bed, long and very flat and firm.  I took one look at the pillow and thought “I’m in for a bad night’s rest!”  But, surprisingly, it was quite comfortable.

Breakfast was Fava Beans (Broad Beans), a big plate full swimming in some sort of oil.  We watched the other residents to find out what we were supposed to do.  They mashed them, so we did too.  Because I like broad beans, I enjoyed it.  There was a large plate of warm flat wholemeal bread, soft white cheese and strawberry jam to finish.  I can tell you this though, it was all very filling and lunchtime came and went without us experiencing any hunger.  If ever you need a breakfast to “stick to your ribs”, that will. :-)

Visiting the Pyramids

16th January, 2007

We’d only just arrived in Egypt the day before, had rested and were ready to a day out.

What we didn’t realise, was that we needed to move to Egyptian time.  They are used to going to bed very late which means they sleep through half the morning!

Oh well, we were on holidays so it didn’t really matter.  Eventually he came and off to the pyramids we went.  So very exciting!

You can enjoy our day also by going here: Egypt – Part 1 – Pyramids
